Liverpool may not go on to win the Premier League; Manchester United might win it. Even after tonight, Liverpool are still trailing United by four points, and they might still win their game in hand.
Liverpool may not even go on to win the Champions League. United defeated Italian champions Inter Milan; Chelsea came back twice to overcome success-hungry Juventus; Arsenal’s youngsters held their nerve to break Roma’s heart; Barcelona put six goals in their opponent’s goal; Muenchen put twelve.
But the ironic thing is: none of that really matters. Why? The simple answer would be because our fate is determined by our own hands.
What most people probably don’t realise is that in life, we can also control the things that will happen to us. Our mind acts like a magnet; and the universe is one gigantic magnet field. So basically, the things that are happening to us depend on what type of energy we attract, whether it is positive or negative.
It seems that Liverpool’s talismanic captain recognises this.
“We have to be confident. What’s the point going into a game thinking you are only going to get a draw or a defeat? It’s important to stay positive,” said captain Steven Gerrard prior to the big match.
True, Liverpool cannot do anything more to directly impact United’s results. But tonight’s result has exposed their vulnerability; they can be beaten, even at home. The result can serve as an inspiration for the ten teams who are yet to play the BPL champion again, to have belief, work harder, and give United a horrid time for 90 minutes.
As for the Champions League, even if Liverpool face the tournament’s favorites such as the teams that are mentioned above, Liverpool directly affect their own outcome. So it really is all up to them.
You see, after tonight, football analysts have to give up their jobs. It’s official: you simply cannot predict football. Even the most optimistic Liverpool die-hards would not dare to predict a 4-0 home victory against Real Madrid in Champions League and a 4-1 victory against arch rivals United. In Old Trafford. Within one week.
This is probably the best week to be a Liverpool supporter, but it’s not enough. They actually want to win the trophies. Which is why I believe that instead of reaching its climax, tonight could be the turning point for Liverpool’s 2008/2009 campaign. Because now, more than ever, Liverpool have their best chance of glory. They’ve tasted some and they want more.
“We won’t give up,” said Gerrard. “We want to win it, but we have to fight and give it everything we’ve got.”
Mark his words; I have a feeling he will keep them. After all, after a week like this, who would dare telling him he can’t? Who would dare telling Liverpool to give up? Who would dare telling Liverpool they can’t?
Because you know what? Yes, they can.
